The Teesside club are also in talks over the £14million transfer of forward Britt Assombalonga
It would certainly prove a signal of intent from owner Steve Gibson were the club to land the pair.
Gibson said he wanted Boro to ‘smash’ the Championship after last season’s relegation from the Premier League and he has thrown his support behind Monk in the transfer marker.
Braithwaite - who has been capped 16 times - scored 11 times in Ligue 1 last season, while Assombalonga netted 14 goals in the second tier.
New Boro manager Garry Monk is determined to ensure both deals are completed this summer
