Inter had lost their perfect record midweek in a surprise 1-1 draw against Bologna so needed a win to keep up the pressure on early pace setters Napoli and Juventus.

However, it was Genoa who started the brighter and they had the better chances in the opening exchanges.

They were getting desperate and needed something to budge, either a moment of brilliance or a piece of sheer luck seemed like the only ways these two sides would be separated, but nothing was forthcoming.

In the end it was an unlikely source who produced the goods with defender Danilo D'Ambrosio heading home Joao Mario's corner three minutes from time to decide the game.

After a hard fought gritty performance was on the verge of proving futile, the Genoa players, feeling hard done by, lost their composure and finished the game with nine men as Stephane Omeonga and Adel Taarabt were shown straight red cards within minutes of each other in stoppage time.
