Fabio Aru wrestled the yellow jersey off Chris Froome’s back as Romain Bardet won stage 12 of the Tour de France with a gutsy uphill burst to the line at Peyragudes.

The Italian rider Aru marked Froome for all but 300 metres of the 214.5km gruelling slog from Pau, when he followed Bardet’s kick to the line with the three-time Tour champion unable to respond up the steep hill.

Froome had been delivered to the final ascent after a brilliant team effort by Sky but it was Aru had more left in the tank, finishing 22 seconds ahead of Froome to take a six-second lead in the general classification.

For Bardet, his first Tour de France stage victory was made all the sweeter as he grabbed back time to put himself third in the general classification, 25 seconds behind Aru, who burst into tears as he was embraced by his Astana performance directors.
