Alexandre Lacazette has confirmed he will leave Lyon this summer, as Arsenal prepare their pursuit of the in-demand French forward.

Lacazette, 25, talked up interest in a move to Atletico Madrid as he made the announcement on the eve of his final game for Lyon against Nice on Saturday night.

Arsenal have made signing a new centre forward their priority this summer and they are set to go head-to-head with Atletico, with the France striker their primary target.

Lyon told Lacazette that he could leave for a European superpower at the right price earlier this year and he has now confirmed his intention to depart.

‘I think that's the right time,’ Lacazette told L’Equipe. ‘I want to discover something else, and to play at a different level.

‘I know very well that on a European scale I am not yet well recognised. I want to see if I can answer the questions that people are asking, and to make further progress.’

Lacazette has scored 128 goals in 284 games since his Lyon debut in 2010, consistently hitting the back of the net to attract the interest of Europe’s big guns.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico are particularly keen suitors, and the player made it clear the admiration was mutual in speaking out on Friday.

‘Atletico is a club that is in the last rounds of the Champions League for several years,’ Lacazette said. ‘It is a great team, in a new stadium, and it is also a club that helps their players progress.

‘And there is Antoine Griezmann. If Atletico is the club I chose, I have not told you, maybe I'll give you another answer in a few months!’

Moving to the La Liga outfit would allow a meeting with countryman Antoine Griezmann, provided he is not sold to Manchester United this summer – a scenario that appeals to Lacazette.

‘It would be a beautiful story if we [Griezmann and Lacazette] could go on together,’ he said.
