Rooney completed an emotional return to Goodison Park on Sunday, signing a two-year deal after deciding to leave Manchester United after 13 years.

He and the rest of Ronald Koeman's men face Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in Tanzania on Thursday afternoon as they begin their preparations for the new season.

Sportsmail will have team news, build-up and live updates from 2pm, with kick-off at 3pm (UK time).

Koeman's starting XI

Ronald Koeman might not have all of his squad available just yet, but his first starting XI of pre-season has still thrown up some interesting choices.

Summer signing Michael Keane starts on the bench, with captain Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams forming a central defensive partnership. Under 20 World Cup-winning duo Jonjoe Kenny and Callum Connolly play at right back and left back respectively.

Maarten Stekelenburg starts in goal after Joel Robles was left out of the travelling squad. Club record signing Jordan Pickford is still on holiday after playing for England's Under 21s at the recent European Championship.

James McCarthy, who has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, starts in central midfield with Morgan Schneiderlin, while Klaassen occupies a more advanced position.

Lennon makes his return to action after overcoming a mental health issue. He is likely to start on the right flank, with Lookman on the left and Rooney central.

DANIEL MATTHEWS: Wayne Rooney and some of his Everton team-mates used the club's pre-season tour of Tanzania as an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of the East African nation.

Alongside Morgan Schneiderlin, Kevin Mirallas and youngster Jonjoe Kenny, the ex-England and Manchester United captain enjoyed a meeting with Maasai warriors.

Rooney presented the warriors with an Everton shirt as the players chatted and posed for photographs during their historic tour of the country.

Rooney starts!

As we suspected, Rooney starts for Everton in their first pre-season friendly after sealing a return to his boyhood club.

The former Manchester United captain looks like he'll be playing as a lone striker, with support coming from summer signing Davy Klaassen, Aaron Lennon and Ademola Lookman.
