As the weather warms up, that feeling of the sun on our skin is a glaring reminder that soon we'll be showing a lot more of it.

But Australian nutritionist Susie Burrell has some tips and tricks to shed that five kilos you may have gained during the months full of wind and pouring rain.

And they should help get your diet into gear right before bikini season appears.

Susie recommends limiting eating hours so that your first meal of the day comes around 8 or 9am, while the last one is consumed by 6 or 7pm.

This will help create an 'overnight fasting effect in the body', Susie told News.com.au.

When our meals stretch over a long period of time, it causes our body to store more fat than it should and takes us out of the habit of only eating when we're hungry.

Susie suggests having a filling breakfast or lunch, which will help keep you fuller for longer and less likely to snack during the day or eat too much during dinner

'Limiting the number of hours we eat food each day has not only been shown to help optimise the hormones that control fat metabolism, but also supports a controlled calorie intake and supports weight loss,' she wrote.

And when it comes to meal planning, Susie said it is important that the biggest one does not come at the end of the your day.

When we have a meal packed with calories at dinner, it is more likely to be stored in our bodies throughout the night.

Instead, Susie suggests having a filling breakfast or lunch and sticking to a light dinner a few hours before bed.

'If you plan to consume a relatively large, filling meal at lunchtime, not only will you shift your calorie intake forward but you will find you are a lot more satisfied, are less likely to need any snacks, and can be satisfied at dinner,' she said.

Susie also recommends cutting out the snacks, whether they're a biscuit with your coffee or fruit and nuts.

Nibbling on treats can actually end up adding 300-400 calories throughout your day.

Instead Susie suggests making sure to eat 'balanced meals' that will keep you full for three to four hours until your next meal.

And since we're talking about things to slash from your diet, Susie also advises cutting out all liquid calories while you're trying to slim down for summer.

'The body does not compensate for liquid calories, which means we do not eat less when we have drunk them and they play havoc with our blood glucose levels,' she writes.

Instead, Susie recommends swapping that milk and coffee or those glasses of red wine with plenty of water and herbal tea.

Although there are plenty of rules to help you slim down for summer, Susie said it's also important to give yourself a day off once in awhile to avoid a big binge later.

'It will be much easier to build yourself a strong food platform that supports weight loss most of the time,' she said, 'And enjoying what life has to offer when you need to.'
