A collection of new images from Star Wars: The Last Jedi spotlight a number of the film’s characters and new locations, including the casino city Canto Bight. To date, Lucasfilm’s marketing campaign for the eighth chapter in the Skywalker family saga has been characteristically brief, but that’s about the change now. Last month, the studio unveiled a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel for the highly-anticipated sequel, signaling a new wave of promotional materials was forthcoming. September sees the Force Friday II event, which sees the tie-in merchandise officially hit store shelves.
While fans start saving up their money for Star Wars shopping sprees, there’s still very little we know about the film’s story. In the spring, a spread from Vanity Fair offered some details, as well as some photographs from the production. Now, another well-known media outlet is offering their own look at The Last Jedi, beginning with more pictures of what’s in store.
EW‘s fall movie preview is obviously going to focus heavily on the return of Star Wars, and to get things going, the magazine has revealed a batch of images that showcase several of the principal characters and the new world they’ll explore. You can check them out in the gallery below:
The biggest plot reveal in these images is the fact that Finn is participating in the Battle of Crait, flying one of the Resistance’s ski speeders as the First Order attacks with their “gorilla walkers.” In The Force Awakens, the stormtrooper-turned-hero could barely control the guns on the Millennium Falcon, so his piloting skills are apparently greatly improved. Finn isn’t the only character who will have his own ship, as Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer is also highlighted. It looks to be taken from a scene in a space battle, which could be the one in the trailer. It’ll be interesting to watch Kylo fly given his family bloodline of ace pilots. As for the others, there doesn’t seem any new information to be gleaned, but it’s exciting to see familiar faces again. Kylo Ren’s repositioned facial scar makes for a striking visual, and Rey is standing at the ruins of the first Jedi Temple – confirming Luke’s mission on Ahch-To.
This should only be the beginning of EW‘s coverage on The Last Jedi, as they’re teasing several more reveals to come over the week. Now that the summer movie season is in the rearview mirror, Episode VIII is the biggest blockbuster remaining on the release schedule and will be dominating headlines in the next few months. Just like The Force Awakens, there will be a blitz through the fall and winter as viewers impatiently count down the days.
