American Horror Story: Cult Opening Titles Get Political

American Horror Story: Cult Opening Titles Get Political

FX releases the official opening titles for American Horror Story: Cult, which feature overt references to the 2016 U.S. election.

You can now watch the opening titles for American Horror Story: Cult online. Series co-creator Ryan Murphy has long maintained that Cult is based around the 2016 U.S. presidential election and has since shared photos of the show’s monsters, casting announcements and teasers for the season online. In addition to bringing back Twisty the Clown, Cult will heavily explore themes about cultish behavior and politics through a story that involves, well, a group of very creepy clowns.

Featuring plenty of blood and gore amid a droning soundtrack that makes “Oh say can you see?” sound like a funeral march, Cult’s opening titles smear plenty of blood across figures like George Washington, Jefferson, and clowns. The titles feature multiple clowns doing everything from popping out of graves to riding a carousel of the damned. American Horror Story season titles usually tie into the story to come, so let the speculation begin about just what the Cult titles hint at for the season to come.

Cult will star American Horror Story series newcomers Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, Alison Pill, and Lena Dunham, along with returning cast members Sarah Paulson and Emma Roberts, among others. Paulson has been one of the consistent cast members to tie the series together, while Roberts left the show for awhile to costar with Lourd in Murphy’s Scream Queens. Roberts and Paulson join Frances Conroy, Evan Peters, Chyenne Jackson, and Adina Porter as veterans preparing to welcome the newcomers to Ryan Murphy’s small screen horror universe.

With American Horror Story renewed for seasons 8 & 9 already, Murphy and his collaborators are free to get all the more creative with Cult. He’s assembled a great cast and these titles are going to give fans a lot to chew on until the show’s premiere next month.  Playing with politics is risky as ever, but these titles do an ample job of creating hope for this new season. With 7 seasons under his belt already, Murphy has already made a name for himself in the modern horror game.

Many fans are no doubt excited for Cult, but others might be wary too. After all, a longtime staple of the show, Kathy Bates won’t be appearing. American Horror Story has always taken the time to feature storied actresses from Bates to Jessica Lange and Lady Gaga. Angela Bassett isn’t expected to appear in Cult, either. Thankfully, Paulson has the chops to handle things on her own, but fans will no doubt miss these classic scream queens this season.

American Horror Story: Cult premieres Tuesday, September 5th on FX.
